WalkBlogRun launched

I've finally found the time to create the accompanying blog to WalkJogRun.  WalkBlogRun will track my progress in the remaining 12 weeks of marathon preparation for the San Francisco marathon and beyond.  In the interests of getting it off the ground I've launched with the default skin of BlogCFC5 but will update the layout handler to match the theme used on WalkJogRun.  I decided on San Francisco since the Chicago marathon falls shortly after my wedding and a two week honeymoon in Greece so I'm sure my training would be shot if I tried it.  Now I just need some tips for training to run hills when you live in a flat city like Chicago!

  1. No hills eh?

You got any quiet multi-story car parks over there?

  2. Actually, I live in a high rise looking out over Lake Michigan so I was considering running the 9 flights of stairs at the end of each run but that's just crazy talk.

  3. Adam, I didnt know you were a runner. I did the last two Chicago Marathons, not fast mind you, but I finished. This years falls the day before MAX so I am debating whether to run. Anyway, if you havent checked it out already you might want to visit http://www.steverunner.com/ . He has an excelent podcast about running, and if you drop a him an e-mail, I am sure he'll plug your site. Nice job! Michael

  4. Michael, thanks for the tip! I'll give it a look and a listen. Hope all is well with the CFUG.

  5. Adam, I saw the link to your site from my buddy Drew Myler. Keep up the running, the fact that you got an 18miler in is a HUGE accomplishment on your way to completing SF. My little piece of advice would be to use Gu packets on your long runs, they give you good energy boosts but you want to try them before the race b/c for somepeople it upsets their stomach. You've probably heard this from others, but it's worth repeating. Don't do anything new on race day, try everything out beforehand. later, -b tinger

  6. Tinger - thanks for the tips and for reading along. 18 miles was a huge step forward for me and i'm really excited about it now. You mentioned Gu packets - is that a generic name or a brand I can try? I've tried the clifshots gel nonsense and was nearly sick while running! I'm open to suggestions...

  7. Yeah, I prefer the Brand Name Gu, smaller packets that you can easily pin to your shorts and pull 'em off as you go along. In my opinion best flavors are Vanilla Bean and Lemon Sublime. enjoy!

  8. I really like your walkjogrun site. I wonder what the differneces in calories is for cycling?

Was good to meet you at CFUNITED and see what you had done here.

  9. Kevin, Good to meet you too. I was wondering about the cycling vs running thing too. I'm contemplating adding an activity selector stored in a cookie where you can pick your sport e.g. rollerblade, run, cycle, skateboard and it would give you the appropriate calculation.
