VMWare Workstation on Hardy Heron

On a whim I upgraded my Ubuntu Gutsy install to Hardy Heron yesterday and while most things are working, a key component to allow me to run my billing was not.  Since Quickbooks Online only supports IE and iPhone browsers (don't get me started about that genius decision), I run VMWare Workstation with XP as a guest OS.

The upgrade went smoothly but when I tried to open VMWare it kept crashing without loading.  A quick scout around and I found this great thread with DirkCoopman's solution.  Basically you edit one file in vmmon.tar, tar it back up and re-run vmware-config.pl.  I'm running Hardy Heron 8.04 and VMWare Workstation 6.0.3 build-80004.

  1. Last time I needed to run Windows on Linux I gave VirtualBox a try. Very nice. Has some very cool features and works very well on Linux.

  2. @Adam:

You may have tried this already, but have you tried just having Firefox spoof the header to report it's IE for Quickbooks Online?

I've had sites that block user agents that were not IE where I've spoofed the header before and had things work just fine. There several plug-ins that will allow you to spoof the user agent in FF.

  3. Funny you should ask Dan, I had to install Firefox 3 over firefox 2 since Firefox 3 has some big bugs still including a broken toolbar (under Heron at least). So I tried to install the User Agent Switcher but it won't install...

  4. If it hangs up on the version - you can open up the .xpi file and bump up the 'version' to force it to work. On Hardy - I've got both FF 2 and 3 installed... FF3 is getting better but still a bit buggy. What toolbar is broken?

  5. I had the same issues with workstation 5. After a lot of digging around I found the solution which was a bit different then the workstation 6 version. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=770716&page=2

I've also tried VirtualBox the past two weeks and I must say I'm very impressed with it. The only option I missed was the fact that I couldn't clone machines with VB.
